Language and Literacy Development
At IE, we’ve crafted a pre-reading initiative catering to children about to embark on their kindergarten journey. Recognizing that reading extends beyond mere word memorization, our focus lies on establishing a robust early literacy foundation. This ensures that children possess vital skills, laying the groundwork for their entry into kindergarten. The program places a significant emphasis on crucial aspects such as letter-sound correspondence, word decoding, comprehension, and phonics/phonemic awareness. In addition to our literacy program, we offer online access to Epic, which presents children with a diverse selection of age-appropriate books. During individualized reading time, we utilize books at the appropriate age level, emphasizing activities like sounding out words, saying the words aloud, and spelling them. This approach not only promotes independent reading but also instills a genuine passion for the written word, fostering the comprehensive development of our young learners.
Literacy plays an essential role in every child’s development, and at IE, we believe children should be exposed to a variety of books to acquire new knowledge. In our classrooms, we provide children with rich texts that represent their background, culture, and interests. Our weekly lessons further reinforce what we are implementing inside and outside of the classrooms. We provide purposeful play and encourage children to ask questions using “what, when, where, and why.” We also use technology to expand on the children’s learning as well as introduce new vocabulary words throughout our weekly lessons and one-on-one interactions.
